He controls the society and the identity of the citizens which show how he is the ultimate determining power of dictatorship. Mustapha is one of the ten controllers and holds great power. I expect him to fight the society and to change the other characters’ perception later on in the story.Īnother archetype figure is God, which is represented by Mustapha Mond. However, John seems to be failing as a hero, as he is not making any significant change. John, unlike other characters, has moral values to avoid the sexual temptation around him.
John also represents the hero, as he thrives through a survival journey in an unfamiliar society. John wants to find a place where he is not alone anymore. That is why he follows Bernard to the more civilized society, hoping to feel a sense of belonging. He does not belong with the savages reservation due to being half Alpha. John was different from people in both societies, that is why he is a lonely orphan Nevertheless, the seeker I believe is the most important figure and is also represented by John. When Bernard was talking to a young man, he told him that “If one’s different, one’s bound to be lonely” (Huxley 119). The Orphan in the novel, John, does not belong in the reservation and is not accepted by the society. This is the poster of the 1980s movie which is based on the novel.Īlso, I find that the novel includes many archetype figures, which are, the seeker, orphan, hero, God, and seductress.
This society determines their identity and teaches them to appreciate it when they, in fact, have no voice and make no choices. People are imprisoned in a specific lifestyle and are divided into castes, but they are taught to love their situation and be happy. There is a classic conflict between the individuals and society. The novel carries a lot of powerful themes of identity, freedom, and confinement. I have started reading the classic science fiction novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and I am amazed by the symbolism used in great detail.
